What Is Echocardiography?

Echocardiography is a non-invasive test that uses ultrasound waves to create detailed images of the heart. These images allow doctors to see the size, structure, and movement of the heart, including how well the chambers and valves are working. Unlike other imaging methods, an echo does not use radiation, making it safe and widely applicable.

How Does It Work?

During the test, a technician places a small device called a transducer on the chest. The transducer sends sound waves through the body, which bounce off the heart and return as echoes. A computer then translates these echoes into moving images on a screen, giving doctors a real-time look at the heart in action.

Depending on what your physician needs to evaluate, there are different types of echocardiograms, including:
